Levers2Learn is a web-based research report to share findings on barriers to and enablers of deeper learning in public high schools. The findings are organized into six categories, or "levers," each of which has the potential to positively and/or negatively influence practitioners' abilities to deepen learning for their students.
More than 500 schools in the US belong to the Deeper Learning Network. Their students are developing cognitive, interpersonal, and intrapersonal competencies essential to their success as citizens and scholars.
But there are a lot more than 500 schools in this country! What is happening for students in these remaining schools? Are their educators finding ways to help them develop these competencies? If so, what factors are making this possible? If not, why not?
Who is it for?
A growing number of leadersin schools, districts, state education agencies, government, nonprofits, and foundations are dedicated to ensuring that all public school students have access to deeper learning experiences. If these deeper learning advocates understand the barriers to and enablers of deeper learning in more traditional school environments, they can make strategic decisions about how best to dedicate their efforts to increase deeper learning for students throughout the country.
After in-depth interviews and card sorting activities with educators, we analyzed the data and surfaced the most common enablers of and impediments to educators' ability to provide their students with opportunities for deeper learning.
Schools are complex environments with interrelated factors that affect educators' practice and students' learning. The barriers and enablers educators face in implementing deeper learning practices in their schools are organized into six themes: Leadership, Equity, Versatility, Experience, Relationships, and Structure. Each of these themes are levers which can positively and/or negatively influence practitioners' abilities to deepen learning for their students.
This site presents these six levers, laying out the landscape, barriers, enablers, and opportunities within each. Most importantly, the site allows visitors to hear educators talk about their day-to-day experiences working to bring deeper learning to their students within the context of public schools. Studying what the educators say is a key step in reaching critical mass and providing deeper learning experiences to all students.
